More People Are Leaving California Than Any Other State. Where Are They Moving?

by Betty Ortiz

If you live in Los Angeles County, you may have noticed something changing.

More homes are being sold. Longtime neighbors are moving away. Friends and family are talking about leaving California and starting a new chapter somewhere else.

For many people, it’s not just a passing thought anymore. It’s becoming a real conversation.

A new study from the retirement planning site Retirement Living confirms what many of us are seeing firsthand: California is losing more residents than any other state in the country. And what’s surprising is that this isn’t just happening with one age group.

People across every generation, from young adults to retirees, are moving out of the Golden State.

The study used recent U.S. Census data and found that more people are leaving California than moving in, creating the highest negative net migration rate in the nation.

California will always be a beautiful place to live. But for many homeowners, the question has become simple:

“Does it still make sense for this stage of life?”

Why Are People Leaving California?

There’s no single reason, but the study pointed to a few common factors.

The cost of living continues to rise. Housing is expensive, taxes are high, and everyday life can feel financially heavy, even for people who have owned their homes for many years.

In recent years, wildfires and climate concerns have also played a role for some families, especially those thinking about long-term safety and stability.

For many, leaving California isn’t about disliking it.

It’s about finding a lifestyle that feels more comfortable, more affordable, or simply more peaceful.

Where Are Californians Moving?

According to the report, many people leaving California are heading south.

States like Florida, Texas, and the Carolinas are seeing major growth, along with nearby options like Arizona and Nevada.

These states often offer lower home prices, lower taxes, and a slower pace of life.

And honestly, this is something I’ve seen personally with my own clients.

One of my clients moved from the San Fernando Valley to San Antonio, Texas. After selling their home here, they were able to purchase a brand-new home in cash. That move gave them financial breathing room and a sense of freedom that felt almost impossible in California.

For many longtime homeowners, the equity they’ve built here can open doors to a completely different lifestyle elsewhere.

Seniors and Retirees Are Leading the Move

When people hear about Californians leaving, they often assume it’s mostly younger families.

But what I’m seeing more and more, especially here in Los Angeles County, is that many moves are happening later in life.

For seniors and retirees, relocation is often about simplicity, comfort, and planning wisely.

Many Baby Boomers and older homeowners reach a point where they start asking different questions:

Do we still need all this space?
Do we want to keep up with the maintenance?
Would retirement feel easier somewhere else?
Should we be closer to family?

These are not quick decisions. They’re emotional, personal, and often tied to decades of memories inside one home.

Florida continues to be one of the biggest destinations for retirees, offering warm weather and many retirement-friendly communities.

I also worked with a retired client who decided to return to the Philippines. She had immigrated to the United States many years ago, worked hard, built a life here, and when it was time to retire, her heart pulled her back home,  closer to family. She used the sale of her California home to build the home she had always dreamed of.

Moves like that remind me that real estate is never just about a house.

It’s about family, roots, and what you want the next chapter to look like.

I’ve also helped couples retire back to Mexico, where they wanted to live a quieter ranch life near loved ones and familiar culture.

Every story is different, but the reason is often the same:

People want their home to match the life they’re living now.

Gen X Is Planning Ahead Before Retirement

Generation X homeowners are also leaving California in large numbers.

This group is not fully retired yet, but they are thinking ahead. Many are balancing careers, supporting adult children, helping aging parents, and asking themselves what they want the next 10 to 20 years to feel like.

Some are choosing states like Florida or Texas early, putting down roots before retirement officially begins.

.

Others are not leaving California entirely, but they are looking for more space, more quiet, and a slower pace of life.

Right now, I’m helping clients who are selling in the Valley and moving toward areas like Palmdale, where they can buy land, enjoy privacy, and create more of a ranch-style lifestyle — without leaving Southern California completely.

I’ve also had clients move to places like Ohio, often because of family ties and a lower cost of living.

Younger Generations Are Moving Too

Millennials and Gen Z are also part of this trend, but their reasons are often connected to jobs and affordability.

Many millennials are relocating to Texas, while Gen Z has been moving toward states like South Carolina, where job growth and lower living costs make it easier to get started.

Even young adults are feeling the pressure of California’s high housing costs.

What This Means for Los Angeles County Homeowners

For homeowners here in Los Angeles County,  especially empty nesters who have owned their homes for decades, this trend brings up important questions.

Many people are quietly wondering what life would feel like with less maintenance, whether downsizing could still keep them close to the community they love, or if relocating nearer to family might make more sense in this next season.

Some also ask if selling could bring more freedom, comfort, and peace of mind.

These are big life decisions, and they deserve time, care, and thoughtful planning. Sometimes the first step isn’t making a move at all. Sometimes it’s simply understanding what options are available, and knowing that whatever you decide, you don’t have to figure it out alone.

At the end of the day, you are the one who gets to decide what the next chapter looks like. Every family situation is different, and the right choice is the one that brings you peace and confidence.
